The new trend from America is becoming increasingly popular in Germany and Austria. DOGA is composed of the two words dog and yoga. It is not a yoga for dogs but yoga with dogs. This special sport became known through the American yoga teacher Suzi Teitelman. The idea came to her at one of her yoga classes at a customer’s home. She noticed that the dogs seemed very interested and so she just took a dog on the mat and tried different exercises with him.
The goal of DOGA is to bring dog and owner closer together. Through the different yoga poses humans and animals should come to rest. The Doga effect: The interaction of the change of the emotional state of humans and animals is here the exciting, because as soon as during the yoga class the relaxation sets in master or mistress, also changes the dog. Because when the person relaxes, the dog becomes calmer. “Dogis” (yoga-practicing dogs) should, according to experts, sleep better and be stronger than their unsportsmanlike counterparts. Because, as with humans, the feeling of bliss should also be achieved in dogs. The Dogis are said to be calmer and have a better behavior than other four-legged friends.
Stretching and stretching exercises or imaginative sleep and Döspositionen are commonplace for dogs and nothing new. Anyway, the dogs keep certain positions of their own accord. Here, playing, dealing with each other is the main focus. Initial massage exercises calm and relax the animal, focusing exclusively on the favorite human. Certain positions must certainly be tried first and here there is a treat for success – a learning process for the dog. DOGA is suitable for all dog breeds. However, as the exercises are done in the group, the dogs should be able to control the basic commands such as space, sitting, and staying.
